Inspire
Me (May 2004)True stories, quotes and information
on inspiration, leadership and kindness to provide hope and direction in your
life. Not
Just a Mom By Author Unknown A
woman named Emily renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was
asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain
how to classify herself. "What
I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you just
a... Of
course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a mother." "We
don't list 'mother' as an occupation... 'housewife' covers it," said the
recorder emphatically. I
forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation,
this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised,
efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator"
or "Town Registrar." "What is your occupation?" she probed. What
made me say it, I do not know... The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research
Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." The
clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had
not heard right. I
repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared
with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official
questionnaire. "Might
I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your
field?" Coolly,
without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a
continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in
the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters,
(the whole darned family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of
course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care
to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job
is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more
of a satisfaction rather than just money." There
was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form,
stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As
I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted
by my lab assistants - ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental
model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new
vocal pattern. I
felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official
records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just
another mother." Motherhood...What
a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door. Does
this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child
Development and Human Relations" and great grandmothers "Executive Senior
Research Associates"? I think so!!! I
also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants". Happy
Mother's Day!!
YOU
ARE AN INSPIRATION: DON'T EVER FORGET
Your
presence is a gift to the world, You're unique and one of a kind. Your
life can be what you want it to be - Take it one day at a time. Count
your blessings, not your troubles, And you'll make it through what comes along.
Within you are so many answers, Understand, have courage, be strong. Don't
put limits on yourself, Your dreams are waiting to be realized. Don't
leave your important decisions to chance - Reach for your peak, your goal,
and your prize. Nothing wastes more energy than worrying - The longer
a problem is carried, the heavier it gets. Don't take things too seriously
- Live a life of serenity, not a life of regrets. Remember
that a little love goes a long way - Remember that a lot goes forever. Remember
that friendship is a wise investment, Life's treasures are people ... together.
Have
health and hope and happiness, Take the time to wish on a star. And don't
ever forget for even a day... How very special YOU are! --Anonymous
POSITIVE
POINTS TO PONDER... Maybe
God wanted us to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one so that when
we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift. Maybe
when the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long
at the closed door that we don't see the one which has been opened for us. Maybe
the best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never
say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've
ever had. Maybe
it is true that we don't know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also
true that we don't know what we have been missing until it arrives. Giving
someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Don't
expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart; but if it does
not, be content it grew in yours. It
takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a
day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Don't
go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go
for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark
day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile. There
are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them
from your dreams and hug them for real. Dream
what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because
you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. May
you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong,
enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. Always
put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts
the other person, too. The
happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make
the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness
lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who
have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched
their lives. Love
begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear. The brightest future
will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life until you
let go of your past failures and heartaches. When
you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your
life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around
you is crying.
