One Holding The Chalk...Usually Wins! (May 2005)Assortment
of plays, drills and ideas to help your program improve. This
month I would like to show you how I have "tweaked" the 1 - 4 High Offense
(from Jim Saia, former assistant coach at UCLA and this past season was the interim
head coach at USC). I
like the wing entry options, but felt something had to be changed on the post
entry options that made for more scoring options inside and allowed better spacing
and timing on the cutting and screening action inside. I have outlined both options
I use when the ball is entered to the high post in the 1 - 4 offense. Again, I
have kept the same wing entry options as diagrammed in Jim Saia's 1 - 4 High Offense
(sold in our coaches store). I
have also included two new set plays we have incorporated into our offensive arsenal.
In a previous newsletter I have outlined our "UCLA" set play. Now we
have UCLA "Up" and UCLA "Down". Next
month I will outline our 1 - 1 - 3 zone defense and how we easily move to our
"41" defense, which is our box and one or diamond and one defense, and
has been extremely effective in taking the opponents star player out of the game
while still doing a nice job of covering the other areas of the floor.
Currently we are 24 - 1, have won our league championship and just recently won
the Heir Apparent Cup championship. If we win our last tournament starting May
10th (called the Emir Cup), it will be the first time in history that the Al Rayyan
Basketball Club has won all three (league championship, Heir Apparent Cup and
the Emir Cup). As mentioned in previous newsletters, I have outlined everything
we are using on the court with this Al Rayyan team in these newsletters and I
am happy to report that it has been extremely effective. I have been an assistant
coach at the collegiate level for over 15 years and I have been chomping at the
bit to use some of the information I have gleaned....not to mention some of the
X's and O's I have found while producing www.scoutinghoops.com. 1
